Lions club of Kumi Central (118304) was chartered on 15th November 2012. It’s located in Region E, Zone 15 in district 411B – Uganda. The club is operational with the local location in Kumi district eastern Uganda.

About

Over the years the club has sponsored three (3) Lions Clubs of Ngora, Soroti City and Mbale City. Additionally, the Kumi Central sponsors three (3) Leo Clubs of Wiggins Secondary School, Bishop Ilukor Girls School and Aporu Okol Memorial Secondary School. The club has been privileged to groom and produce active and vibrant club leaders who have since transcended to district level leaders including Zone Chairpersons, Region Chairpersons, Cabinet Treasurer, Cabinet Secretary and District Governor. The club has 43 members, 23 females and 20 males.

In line with Lions International focus areas, Kumi Central has mainly focused on environment through establishment of the tree signature project in Kumi municipality. The tree signature project has improved the tree cover in the area and created a positive and conducive and friendly environment surrounding within the municipality. Working with the school-based Leo clubs the tree project has been expanded to the schools with Leo’s participating in their planting, care and protection. This is in addition to other trees planted in the civic area around the town.

Another major area of focus by the club has been on diabetes awareness, education and testing, The club through support from LCIF has implemented two projects. The first project being Teso Diabetes Project which covered three districts of Kumi, Ngora and Bukedea . The project provided and supplying diagnostic materials for diabetes testing and screening to twenty (20) health facilities including renovation of laboratories in two health centre IV of Bukedea and Kumi.

Currently, the club with other sister clubs in the Zone and Region D are implementing yet another diabetes project in East Lango described as East Lango Diabetes Project.  The project is being implemented through partnerships and memorandums of understanding with five (5) district local governments of Alebtong, Otuke , Dokolo, Amolatar and Kalaki. The local governments through their health facilities are provided with diagnostic materials to screen and test people for diabetes free of charge. In addition, diabetes awareness and education including training of health workers is being undertaken. These projects are supporting in highlighting the dangers and challenges posed by diabetes to the community with most people not in the know about their diabetes status.

Other areas of focus include vision, childhood cancer education awareness creation, support to youth, disaster, hunger and humanitarian support. Kumi Central is a model club and has been vibrant and supportive of Lions Clubs International Foundation.  The club has donated US dollars $1994 fiscal year 2024/2025. The club seven (7) Melvin Jones Fellows as of 4th May, 2025. Among them is one diamond Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, Lion Dr Ekure John.

Club Leaders

The current club President, Lion Susan Asio Ekure, is a Melvin Jones Fellow. She provides leadership with Lion Johnson Opolot as Club Secretary and Lion Echengu Julius as the Club Treasurer, together with a vibrant and active board. Lion Semakula Moses, the Region Chair, Region E is a member of Kumi Central and Lion Eng Julius Simon Olupot, the Zone Chair, Zone 15.  The current Chair, Council of Governors for district 411B- Uganda, Lion Christine Hellen Amongin Aporu is as well a member of Lions Club of Kumi Central. She is also the Chairperson of Disaster at Multiple District 411.

Ongoing & Past Projects

The clubs ongoing projects are expansion of the tree signature project, implementation of the East Lango Diabetes Project and provision of Garbage bins to Kumi municipality. The past completed and closed projects are Teso Diabetes Project, individual humanitarian support to the needy and the elderly in the community, Education support to school children is an ongoing support.
